Here at Hanrahan Health (HH), we have the opportunity to work across our different clinics that are based in Campbelltown, Bowral and Goulburn. On some days, you might work entirely from the clinic, on others it may be a combination of school / home, and clinic visits, conducting assessments. When you have reports, resource development, online team meetings, Telehealth sessions, and AHA plans to review, you may have the option to work from home. Every day looks different!

It is always a good idea to work out what the best way is for you to transport all of your equipment / resources. As OTs, we generally have a range of resources – from big to small. I use a suitcase to store most of my resources, then carry a tote bag with more resources, e.g., sensory items, games, etc., as well as a folder with all of my worksheets, and laminated resources within it. My boot acts as another resource room for me!

Every week, I have the opportunity to meet with my supervisor to brainstorm ideas, check my dashboard (KPI’s, client nurturing, record notes from supervision), etc., make sure that everything is up to date, set both short and long-term goals, discuss plans for PD courses, share core values that I have embodied over the previous week, and share highlights from my week, being both personal and work-related. It is a great way to catch up and speak about all things OT!

My typical workday is from 8am – 5pm, then on Friday it is from 8am – 3pm, with a one-hour lunch break daily. I work within a very supportive team, with a combination of Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists, being both face-to-face and Telehealth clinicians that are interstate.

We have a weekly team meeting on a Monday morning, weekly OT professional development (PD) meeting on a Friday morning, and then an in-house PD on a Wednesday – where everyone gets the chance to present on a topic of their choosing. We also have an early career PD program available to external clinicians! Alongside this, we complete quarterly QI projects aiming to further develop our business model. Our most recent project within the OT team has been to create how-to guides and assessment videos for new grad OTs to refer to as part of their induction and ongoing learning. We also complete quarterly jobs including creating social media posts, writing blogs, and engaging in supervision sessions, case studies, and article reviews, to name a few!

There is plenty of room for growth as an OT here at HH, as I started as an Intermediate OT, and I am now a Senior OT. My role includes supervising new grad OTs, taking on OT students from universities, running team meetings, reviewing and creating AHA plans, working in collaboration with my colleagues toward achieving our clients and their families’ goals, conducting assessments, along with report writing, and of course engaging in daily therapy with my clients – which is the best part! I mostly work with children, however, I do have the opportunity to assess and work with older clients too!

I love being a paediatric OT!
